ENTRY 4 - PORTFOLIO - ORAL DEVELOPMENT

Action Research Project

This is my action research project about the effects of oral summaries on the development of speaking skills in EFL students. I chose this topic because in many online English classes like Planet English, students do a lot of written exercises but have few opportunities to speak. I wanted to find a strategy to help my students improve their fluency, confidence, and pronunciation. Canva Presentation

I learned that oral summaries are an effective classroom activity to develop speaking skills. According to authors like Nunan, Richards, and Ellis, meaningful communication is essential for language learning. Oral summaries require students to explain lesson content using their own words, which creates a real communicative purpose. I also learned that action research helps teachers identify problems, implement strategies, and observe results to improve their teaching practice.

I felt motivated and excited because this project addresses a real problem I have observed in my classes. I also felt proud that I am proposing a practical solution, not just theory. However, I felt a little nervous about how students will respond.

The most difficult part was designing the oral summary activity to meet all the criteria of an effective task: focus on meaning, an information gap, use of students own resources, and a clear outcome. I also found it challenging to think about how to collect qualitative data through observation and teacher reflection in the online environment where I work.

This research project helps me become a better teacher because I am learning to identify problems in my classroom and find evidence-based solutions. I will use oral summaries in my classes to increase speaking time, reduce hesitations, and improve fluency. This strategy will also help students develop confidence.

This project taught me that speaking skills need explicit attention in the EFL classroom. Oral summaries are a simple but powerful strategy to give students more opportunities to speak, organize their ideas, and communicate meaning. As a future teacher, I will continue using action research to improve my practice and help my students become more confident and fluent English speakers.

  4. This action research demonstrates a strong commitment to innovative teaching. It perfectly applies the principles of Task-Based Language Teaching by turning a routine review into a meaningful communicative task. I think, this routine will definitely increase students' confidence, fluency, and awareness of their own learning process.
